Student Electives 2010/11
     
 

Healing Foundation elective awards are open to students throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland and are worth £1,200 per student to cover essential living costs for a 6 to 8 week period of research within the UK or Ireland.

 

Awards in partnership with BAPRAS and BSSH are available to medical undergraduates only. Awards in partnership with the BBA are available to medical undergraduates and post-graduate nursing, therapy or paramedical students. Awards in partnership with the CFSGB&I are available to all undergraduate students including nurses, speech and language therapists and other associated health professionals.

 

Students may be interested in the following examples of research institutions offering elective placements. If you would like to apply to conduct your elective with any of the individuals listed below, please email them directly with a copy of your CV and a brief supporting statement/letter of introduction.

 

Mr Baljit Dheansa (BAPRAS, BBA), Burns Centre, Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead and Blond McIndoe Research Foundation, East Grinstead
Research Interest: Treatment of burns with novel agents, cultured cells and skin substitutes; Scar manipulation; Translational laboratory research assessing biomaterials and wound manipulation.

Lt Col Steve Jeffery (BAPRAS, BBA), Consultant Plastic Surgeon, Selly Oak Hospital, Birmingham
Research Interest: The incidence of heterotopic ossification in amputation stumps in military patients. Does marital status affect psychological well being in injured soldiers. The incidence of osteomyelitis following open fractures sustained during combat.

Mr Jack Kelly (BAPRAS), University Hospital Galway, Ireland
Research Interest: Tissue Engineering including adipose tissue and hernia repair.

Nigel Mercer (BAPRAS, CFSGB&I), The Cleft Unit of the South West of England, Frenchay Hospital Bristol, BS16 1LE
Research Interest: Cleft lip and palate, speech investigation, velocardiofacial syndrome, psychological aspects of care, particularly in cleft lip and palate and in aesthetic surgery.

Research Interest: Clinical results from surgery for cleft lip and palate.

Research Interest: Head and neck cancer and melanoma.
