Cleft lip and palate (CLP) is a distressing but common birth defect affecting one in every 600 to 700 children born in the UK. The Healing Foundation will support a major programme of research in this area at a UK University with excellent links to a clinical centre treating all aspects of CLP. This 10 year research investment, worth up to £5 million from the Foundation, will explore the genetic, clinical and broader therapeutic issues of cleft lip and palate in order to improve understanding of the condition and offer better treatments and support for patients and their families. With a major 'Cleft Gene Bank' and a substantial 'Clinical Research Programme' envisaged, the programme will be the largest of its kind anywhere in Europe.
Applications have now been received to host this programme of research. Following review and selection, a decision will be announced later in 2010. |
